Russians reassured by promise of talks on 'Star Wars.'

Article Abstract:

There has been a moderate response from Russia to President George W. Bush's announcement that he is committed to creating a national missile defence system and going beyond the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty. The Russian government has clearly reacted favourably to the non-confrontational language of Bush's statement on missile defence.

There are stormy days ahead if Mr Blair backs this dangerous folly

Article Abstract:

There will be significant conflict within the Parliamentary Labour Party if UK Prime Minister Tony Blair insists on backing US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice-President Dick Cheney, who are the driving forces behind the missile defence programme known as Son of Star Wars. It is argued that resisting this programme is more important to Labour than ensuring that Blair remains in office.

Suicide bombers threaten Mid-East accord

Article Abstract:

The Israeli cabinet has suspended discussion of the agreement on a partial withdrawal from the West Bank in return for Palestinian security guarantees following a suicide bomb attack on a market in central Jerusalem, Israel. The bomb killed the two bombers and injured 21 people. There are now growing fears among Israelis and Palestinians that the deal reached at the Wye Plantation in Maryland will not be ratified. The Israeli cabinet has now called on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to take firm action against Islamic militants.
