Think big, act small

Article Abstract:

The craft of telling a story through the theatricality of music is extremely interesting, according to French-Canadian theatre director Robert Lepage. He has gained a reputation for tackling large projects, and his latest venture is a production of Gustav Mahler's song-cycle 'Kindertotenlieder,' a piece lasting 25 minutes. He has only been involved relatively recently in opera, the form that this piece most closely resembles. He is keen to emphasize that he is not attempting to modernize Mahler, but accepts that this piece is very powerful in an era where there is much focus on children's innocence and death.

Playing to a different tune

Article Abstract:

Mozart's opera 'The Magic Flute' has always been interpreted in many different ways. Further interpretations are being added by three new stagings which are currently taking place. Stuart Maunder is directing the British Youth Opera in a staging which gives a key role to some puppets, while David Freeman's Opera Factory production has a small cast and orchestra and is set in a circus ring. Porpoise Production's staging by Sara V. Chew has a keyboard and a computer instead of an orchestra, while the plot has been extensively modernised.

Once in a while the odd thing happens...

Article Abstract:

Mixed views have been expressed about Benjamin Britten's operetta 'Paul Bunyan,' written in collaboration with W.H. Auden. This work, which was commissioned for student voices, premiered at Columbia University in 1941. It was not very warmly received, so Britten did no further work on it until 1974, when excerpts from it were performed at the Aldeburgh Festival. A new production is to be performed shortly by the Royal Opera. This is the work of American director Francesca Zambello.
