A sex scandal in Washington could lead to a war in the Middle East

Article Abstract:

Allegations that President Bill Clinton was involved in extra-marital relationships have meant that he cannot afford to come into conflict with the Senate or Congress, where US policy on the Middle East is determined by pro-Israeli lobbyists. In turn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has felt free to ignore US pressure. Similarly, domestic pressure on Clinton is working to the benefit of Saddam Hussein. If Iraq is attacked by the US because of its refusal to cooperate with weapons inspectors, then Arab states will come under strong pressure to speak out in favour of Iraq.

Deadly cost of a degrading act

Article Abstract:

The UK and the US have been misguided in deciding to launch air strikes against Iraq. No firm policy has been drawn up on this issue, and no consideration has been given to what will happen after the attacks come to an end. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair wishes ordinary people to believe that the attacks are a punishment for Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, and that the international community has no quarrel with ordinary Iraqis. It would be better to abandon sanctions against Iraq, as these are causing real suffering for ordinary Iraqis, and then back the real supporters of democracy in Iraq.
