Article Abstract:

Japanese filmmaker Kore-eda Hirokazu attempted in his film 'After Life,' in which the recently dead choose a single moment of their life to remember and inhabit for ever, to select memories that would appeal directly to viewers' five senses. He emphasizes that half of the people in the film are real people, while many of the actors also tell stories about themselves. He states that, in this position, he would not choose a memory, preferring to help others to film their one redeeming moment.

Freaks and film-makers

Article Abstract:

Russian filmmaker Alexei Balabanov feels that Russian people want positive things, rather than the negative films he makes. However, he only wants to make negative things because that is how he was born. He indicates that he is not concerned about criticism of his film 'Of Freaks and Men,' which was refused distribution in Russia. He plans that his next film will have a strongly human element.

The bad boy and the bubble

Article Abstract:

Film director Todd Haynes has gained a strong reputation for taking very unusual approaches. He first came to public attention with 'Superstar,' an animation film made in 1987 which has now gained cult status. Later films, such as 'Poison,' have attracted mixed reactions. His most recent film is 'Safe,' which has also been the subject of bizarre audience reactions.
