Throne, mosque and parliament battle for power

Article Abstract:

King Hussein gradually introduced democracy to limit the power of the Islamic fundamentalists in Jordan. It has reduced violent militancy but the Islamic movement has restricted women's rights since it gained 29 out of the 80 seats in the 1989 elections. Muslim groups seek a ban on bank interest contrary to Islamic law and obtained a law banning alcohol. The Islamic Action Front opposes the Middle East peace process. The prophet Mohammed was an ancestor of the King's, but fundamentalists do not find him sufficiently religious.

Fears cloud view from East Bank

Article Abstract:

Discussions about confederation between Jordan and the West Bank is popular with the inhabitants of the East Bank, about 1/2 of whom are Palestinian. Jordanians are concerned about retaining their identity and the Islamic movement fears a peace treaty would affect their aim for an Islamic Palestinian state. Palestinians would use the Jordanian dinar as their currency. Some Jordanians in the East Bank desire peace but some feel threatened by Palestinian emigration from refugee cmaps in Lebanon and Syria.

The Black Panthers were associated with Fatah, the mainstream of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, until chairman Yasser Arafat began attending peace negotiations. Now the Panthers hide in the hills to hunt down suspected Palestinian collaborators in their own community.
