Through the grass sharply

Article Abstract:

Christopher Proudfoot is a director of Christie's South Kensington and also an avid collector of old lawn mowers. He has a collection of 140 and puts his fascination with them down to a love of restoring old machinery and getting it to work. Up to a 14 in mower was meant to be pushed by a man and anything larger than that usually had a tow bar on it. Over 14 inches was termed man and boy, 16 inches man and lad and 20 inches two man. Good examples are difficult to find and he knows of only a handful of other collectors.

Privy to the secret of royal knickers

Article Abstract:

Vintage underwear is now greatly sought after by collectors, and even imitations can sell at high prices. Collectors are particularly keen to purchase underwear which belonged to Queen Victoria, and there are large quantities in museums and private collections. Queen Victoria often passed items of underwear on to her ladies-in-waiting, and in this way it has become widely distributed.

The mechanical mystery tour

Article Abstract:

There are many very keen collectors of contemporary automata, especially in the US and Japan. The work of British maker Paul Spooner is particularly in demand. He never gives his models' faces expressions, as he feels that viewers should be allowed to imagine their own. His pieces can be very expensive, but inexpensive copies are readily available.
