Mixed views are being expressed about the long-term prospects for an improvement in the UK stock market following the interest rate cut in the US. Some observers continue to anticipate that the US economy will be technically in recession by mid-2001.

Economic effect of the tragedy is yet to be seen

The likely economic impact of the terrorist attacks in the US is considered. Foreign investors may review their investments in the US, possibly bringing a decline in the dollar. In the long term, however, the most significant effect on financial markets may result from a reevaluation of risk.

Ties with the US may make Britain more exposed to contagion

Article Abstract:

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon are set to have a lasting impact on the pattern and level of consumer spending in both the US and the UK. There is likely to be a shift to conventional quality instead of innovative products and services. A recovery in spending will not take place until the second half of 2002 at the earliest.
