Time to start making enemies

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is currently at the height of his popularity. His government has an extremely large majority, and he has almost no political enemies to attack. However, it will not be very long before he has to start making decisions which could damage his government's popularity. He will probably have to adopt a radical approach to welfare reform, for example, and will also have to address the need to tackle climate change and local environmental damage. He may avoid directly raising taxes, but alternative measures could prove equally unpopular.

Alastair Campbell - Blair's virtuous thug and now a key Tory target

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has a very strong ability to win people round to his way of thinking, but uses Alastair Campbell, his press secretary, if he wishes to express negative views. This approach is part of a wider policy of ensuring that Blair himself avoids criticism. Campbell is probably Blair's closest friend, and is extremely influential. It was inevitable that he would attract controversy when he became Blair's press secretary, as he was already a well-known journalist and broadcaster.

Brilliant leaks and bubbling resentments

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair has received negative publicity recently as rumours that the party is being taken over by a small number of people determined to have total control have grown. He is likely to suffer short-term damage to his image as a result of this, and must ensure that he tackles this difficult issue directly at the forthcoming Labour party conference. It is vital that he shows that he does not fit in with the caricature which is beginning to develop.
