Targets of enemy bombers and our own demolition men

Article Abstract:

The decision by the RAF and the UK government in 1942 to begin focusing on 'soft' targets led to the destruction of a number of ancient city centres in Germany. The Germans responded with extensive bombing raids on the most culturally significant parts of British cities such as Exeter and Bath. This prompted the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings to take action to ensure that bomb-damaged historic buildings were not needlessly demolished. This came too late for Exeter, where demolition gangs tore down buildings which could have been restored.

Lair of the Leopard

Article Abstract:

Uncontrolled development and neglect are posing a serious threat to the beautiful Baroque buildings of Palermo, Sicily. These include the Palazzina Cinese, a Chinese-style palace built in 1799, and Via Allora, formerly a street of Baroque palaces. Conserving old buildings is extremely difficult in Palermo, where real estate is a very important business and constructing apartment blocks is used as a way of laundering illegally earned money.

Danger, developers at work

Article Abstract:

The UK still has a reasonable amount of Georgian urban architecture left, but this is increasingly under threat as developers move in. In London, at least three significant groups of late-Georgian buildings, which remain unlisted, could be demolished. The most important of these is a terrace in Baker Street built in the period 1788-1792.
