To Russia with love - thanks to the father of perestroika

Article Abstract:

The reforms introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev made it easier for foreigners to have relationships with ordinary Russians. Until then, foreigners had been subject to close KGB surveillance, and were only allowed to live in designated apartment blocks. Even under Gorbachev, there were still some difficulties, but the general atmosphere was more positive, with the government being careful to avoid being accused of human rights abuses.

Russia's new liberalism fails death row man

Article Abstract:

Russian death-row prisoner Nikolai Pozhedayev, who was made to wait for five years before a decision was finally made about his fate, was executive on Jan 18, 1996, at the age of 31. His execution took place only a short time before Russia acceded to the Council of Europe, which requires its members to abolish the death penalty. However, he may not be the last person to be executed in Russia.

Yeltsin reassures Russia from hospital bed

Article Abstract:

Russian president Boris Yeltsin is determined to remain in full control, despite having been admitted to hospital with chest pains. He has reassured Russians that he will return to his duties as soon as possible, and has not changed any working plans. Financial markets have remained calm, as Russia now has a clear system for handing over power if a head of state is unwell.
