To consolidate and to kowtow

Article Abstract:

Mr Chris Patten 48, becomes Governor of Hong Kong until Jul 1 1997 when Hong Kong returns to China. His job is to manage the transition with conciliatory skills. He will be treated like royalty with a tax-free salary of 150,000 pounds sterling a year and 56 staff. China awaits decisions on appointments to the Executive Council and the number of directly elected seats on the Legislative Council. Martin Lee was elected to ensure that the joint declaration is executed as signed, not made more democratic.

Hong Kong's vote for confusion

Article Abstract:

The main outcome of the recent election to Hong Kong's Legislative Council will be a political scene which is even more volatile than it was before. Many changes will take place in the run-up to Hong Kong being handed over to Chinese rule, and this will be a period of great uncertainty. China will play a major role in determining whether the hand-over of Hong Kong goes smoothly.
