Tom Alexander

Shopkeeper, civic leader and art collector Tom Alexander was born in Kirkintilloch, Scotland, in 1915. He took over his father's retail business on leaving school, and served in the Army during the second world war. He co-founded the Arran Film Society in 1961.

Michael Strachan

Businessman and writer Michael Strachan was born in Oxhey, England, in 1919. He was commissioned into the Army in 1940, and in 1946 went to Cambridge University, England, to study Economics. He joined the Ben Line, becoming a partner in 1950.
