Tom Bradley

Article Abstract:

Police officer and politician Thomas Bradley gained a place at the University of California at Los Angeles through an athletics scholarship. However, he dropped out a year before graduation to take up employment with the police department. He became the only black man to be promoted to lieutenant under the tenure of Chief William Parker. He subsequently took a law degree in evening classes and left the police force for the bar. He became drawn to politics, and in 1963 was elected a city council member. He was mayor of Los Angeles between 1973 and 1993.

How can 180 people eating lunch and shopping in Rome help these children?

Article Abstract:

Many non-governmental organisations and individuals within the United Nations feel that the four-day World Food Summit currently being hosted by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome, Italy, on behalf of around 180 national delegations is a waste of time and resources. The draft declaration associated with the event has no real power or significance, and there has been very little enthusiasm among world leaders for the summit itself.
