Transfer fever grips publishers as Hornby joins Penguin for 2m pounds sterling

Article Abstract:

It is believed that publishing house Penguin has enticed best-selling author Nick Hornby away from Gollancz for a fee of 2 million pounds sterling. Hornby's deal with Penguin will involve him writing two more books in the early years of the 21st century. This is the latest in a series of moves by high-profile authors. Some observers believe that such deals will have a negative impact on less well-known authors. In some cases, offering authors large advances has proved very profitable, but this is a significant risk for publishing houses.

How heroin is running in the veins of a tax haven

Article Abstract:

The island of Jersey has very low crime levels and almost no unemployment at all. However, the use of heroin on Jersey has increased significantly since 1993. In 1998, police seized 657 grammes of heroin, from only 4 grammes in 1993. Jersey's Alcohol and Drugs Service believes that there are now around 2,000 opiate users on the island. Jersey has adopted a progressive approach to dealing with drug abuse, focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
