Tread carefully through the 1992 minefield

Article Abstract:

Country house auctions attract the general public who tend to pay more than the trade. Local people are keen to possess souvenirs of well-known families. Some inexperienced attenders enjoy the atmosphere and entertainment. Seeing thousands of pounds changing hands encourages private buyers to pay exorbitant prices for simple goods as they seem low in comparison. Trade bidding at country house sales is for the 50,000-150,000 pounds sterling lots which are rare at regular auctions during the recession.

After the anti-freeze, Austria's dry season

Article Abstract:

The scandal over Austrian wine production in 1985 created a new wine culture. Most Austrian wines are dry. The most popular is gruner veltliner, similar to riesling. The most delicate gruner veltliner is produced in the Wachau. Morillon is grown in Styria, which traditionally produces a fruity, aromatic wine similar to chablis. International style chardonnay is produced in the regions using barrel-fermentation in small oak casks. Aromatic, high acidity reds comprise 20% of Austrian wines.

So you want to impress your friends

Article Abstract:

The basic components of a wine's character are its grape variety, location and winemaking process. The same family of grapes, soil from the same region, similar climate and similar tradition and philosophy of winemaking can produce an affinity between different wines. The type of grape affects taste and aroma. Location, environment and climate modify the grape's character.
