Triumphal march of a nation: Jubilee party fills the streets with pride

Article Abstract:

India's Golden Jubilee of independence started with a march in Aug 1997, and the streets of New Delhi, India, have been designed for this type of celebration. Eight stages have been set up and dancers performed in 28 teams from throughout India. Music, lasers and fireworks were part of the climax of the celebrations. There was violence in Assam where a bomb exploded, and riots occurred during celebrations in Karachi, Pakistan. Yet the cleberations have allowed problems to be put aside during one evening.

Sonia reels in the crowds for Congress

Article Abstract:

India's Congress Party is hoping that the active participation of Sonia Gandhi, widow of Rajiv Gandhi, in its campaigning will revive its fortunes. In some parts of the country, the party's support has already dwindled too much to be revived, but a large number of people attended a rally in Karnataka state, where the party is still a force. They listened politely to Sonia Gandhi's speech, but she did not really show the charisma required for a really successful political leader.

Indian election proves vast exercise in futility

Article Abstract:

The Indian election, which will involve more than 600 million people electing 543 MPs, will be a very lengthy process. There will be five polling days, the final one being Oct 3, 1999, and it could take up to a further four weeks for an administration to be formed. It is unlikely that the electoral process will produce a government able to rule for a complete term. There has been very little serious debate of the most significant issues.
