They belch smoke and steam, but Port Talbot loves its furnaces

Article Abstract:

British Petroleum has the strong support of the residents of Port Talbot, Wales, where the company has played a leading role in community initiatives. The company shed employees from its Port Talbot plant, but invested 40 million pounds sterling in creating a business park, where 70 new companies became established, employing almost 800 people. It has also created a scheme to offer inexpensive unsecured loans for local small businesses. Its plant may be closed down within the next 10 years, so it drew up plans to turn adjacent land into an energy park. However, the government has expressed reservations about these plans.

Creative tension

Article Abstract:

Professor Ian Plimer, head of the School of Earth Sciences at Melbourne University, is bringing a case in the Federal Court of Australia against a fundamentalist Creationist who claims to have detected Noah's Ark in Turkey. The Creationist is charged with selling 'misleading and deceptive' material to encourage interest in his search for Noah's Ark. Plimer has brought the case because he believes that Creationists are using Australian schools as a source of converts to their fundamentalist beliefs. This reflects a wider trend for people to question Darwin's beliefs.
