Pollyanna vs the pessimists

Article Abstract:

There are few signs that ordinary people in the UK share the government's optimism about the future of the economy and of society in general. Many people feel that the world is getting worse, and there is a general atmosphere of pessimism throughout all social classes, not just the poor. This attitude is very similar to that which prevailed at the end of the 19th century, when there was extensive media coverage of family breakdown and moral degeneration, as there is today. It is now time to stop simply talking about these problems and to take positive action.

Private tolerance and public panic

Article Abstract:

Many ordinary people are now much more liberal in their attitudes than was the case in previous generations, and are willing to accept trends such as cohabitation and babies being born outside marriage. This contrasts sharply with the public mood, which is increasingly intolerant. A recent speech by Labour party leader Tony Blair highlighted the dilemmas surrounding this issue. He is attempting to address the moral concerns of the traditional right, but these must be linked with the moral concerns of the left about the poor and the dispossessed.

New Age may be mainstream, but it's a mistake

Article Abstract:

There is now very strong interest among ordinary people in the UK in all aspects of New Age thought. This has led to the development of an extremely profitable industry, where latest trends appeal particularly to the most vulnerable people, often those with physical or emotional problems. New Age is based on superstition, which has the effect of diminishing people. It encourages people to overlook the power of science, which does not delude anyone.
