Troops sent in to end chaos on streets of Jamaica

Article Abstract:

There have been violent clashes between rival gangs in Kingston, Jamaica. The violence has been partly fuelled by political rivalries, and Prime Minister PJ Patterson is likely to hold talks with the main opposition party to try to calm the situation.

Taliban to make last stand in besieged Kandahar

Article Abstract:

Anti-Taliban Pashtun militiamen are approaching Kandahar, Afghanistan, the last stronghold of the Taliban. The city is also being attacked by US aircraft. Taliban leadre Mullah Mohammed Omar has told his troops not to surrender.

Two months of silence from land of kidnapping, chaos and Kalashnikovs

Article Abstract:

The remains of three Britons and one New Zealander who were taken hostage in Chechnya, Russia, in Oct 1998 have been discovered 40 miles from Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. Hostage taking and murder are extremely common in the region, and 176 people have been kidnapped there since the beginning of 1998. Granger Telecom, the company for which three of the men worked, stated that they were aware of the dangers of working in Chechnya and had volunteered to go there.
