UK: CONCERNS OVER BNFL MANAGEMENT

Article Abstract:

New concerns have been expressed by Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers over the management of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), following the sacking of two more Sellafield workers over the fabrication of safety data bound for Japan. A number of other workers are still to face disciplinary action, although they will work at the plant until further decisions are made. According to Mr Byers, the falsification of the uranium and plutonium mixed-oxide (Mox) data makes it essential that private sector management disciplines should be introduced to BNFL, where there is a fundamental flaw in the management. His comments cast doubt over plans for the part-privatisation of the company.

UK: BNFL CHIEF EXECUTIVE QUITS

Article Abstract:

British Nuclear Fuels' (BNFL) chief executive, has resigned following a critical Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) report which claimed that information on the safety of plutonium fuel had been falsified. John Taylor's departure is expected to be confirmed on 29 February 2000 and is part of a major shake-up involving management at BNFL which may lead to further resignations and impair government plans to sell-off part of the group and generate GB[pound] 1.5bn. BNFL is accused in the NII report of allowing deliveries of uranium and plutonium mixed oxide from the Sellafield facility to Japan to be tampered with illegally.

UK: BNFL GIVEN CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety Executive's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) has accepted the responses of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), , to recommendations made following a data falsification scare in 1999. In September 1999 it was revealed that process workers at the Mox Demonstration Facility at Sellafield had been falsifying the safety records on batches of Mox fuel. Following the revelation the NII investigated the matter and made 15 recommendations to BNFL, and warned the company that a failure to implement all of the recommendations would result in it being prohibited from reopening the plant. The NII's acceptance of BNFL's responses paves the way for the eventual commissioning of the Mox plant.
