UK: BNFL UNDER FIRE OVER SAFETY STANDARDS

Article Abstract:

British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) has found wanting over safety standards regarding output of mixed oxides (Mox) of uranium and plutonium fuel in an investigation by The Independent newspaper. BNFL is alleged to have reduced safety standards in order to stop delays in the delivery to customers abroad of the controversial plutonium fuel. BNFL had already been criticised for falsifying information in a Nuclear Installations Inspectorate report published in February 2000. The Commons Select Committee will examine the latest charge against BNFL on 7 March 2000.

UK: BNFL CHIEF'S ADMISSION OVER MOX PLAN

Article Abstract:

British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) will encounter problems winning clearance for commercial Mox plutonium fuel from the UK government, its new chief executive, Norman Askew, admitted on 9 March 2000. The UK-based nuclear power group is looking to develop the GB[pound] 300mn facility and says that it could generate revenues totalling GB[pound] 2bn. The plant will make Mox of uranium and plutonium and BNFL says that if clearance is not forthcoming, it will be faced with the dilemma of dealing with the large amounts of plutonium created at Sellafield's Thorp facility through spent nuclear fuel reprocessing.
