UK: BT SERVICE OFFERS SAME PHONE NUMBER GLOBALLY

Article Abstract:

British Telecom (BT), and AT&T Wireless have announced a new service called World Connect, which will offer mobile phone users the same number in Europe, Asia and the US. In the past, European mobile phone users on the GSM network have been unable to use their handsets in the US, where TDMA is preferred. Initially European customers travelling to the US will have to rent or buy new handsets. However a universal phone that will cover both regions will be available from next year. Although the price of handsets has not yet been released, the service will cost GB[pound] 150.99, and can be rented daily or weekly. It will only be available to UK customers subscribing to BT Cellnet. The new service, which is backed by a number of telecom service providers worldwide, will be able to reach 60mn customers in 20 countries.

UK: MOBILES FORCE SCHOOL PHONE BILLS HIGHER

Article Abstract:

According to school headmasters in the UK, many school phone bills are being driven up by parents wishing to be contacted on their mobile phones. Headmasters are concerned that requirements for schools to contact parents when a child is ill or missing school will lead to less money being spent on books. The situation has led to calls for British Telecom to reduce the price of calls made to mobiles by schools in the same way schools receive lower Internet charges.

UK: GOVERNMENT STIPULATION ON PHONE LICENCES

Article Abstract:

The UK government revealed on 14 February 2000 that firms which are linked would be able to retain licences covering third generation mobile phone services on condition that such ties are ended inside 180 days of the auction's culmination. The decision is regarded as a boost for Vodafone AirTouch which intends to spin off Orange to shareholders during the latter half on 2000 in the wake of the former's purchase of the latter's German parent, Mannesmann.
