UK: FEARS THAT MEASLES OUTBREAK COULD STRIKE

Article Abstract:

Doctors in the UK have expressed fears of an outbreak of measles in the UK similar to a rash of cases in Dublin, Ireland. Low rates of immunisation have been attributed for over 1,220 measles cases in Dublin, with a similar scenario now expected to reach the UK. Cases of measles have gradually been declining since the introduction of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. However, concerns about the potential for the disease to spread have been raised as some groups are opposed to immunisation and fears over the safety of the MMR vaccination.

UK: CONCERN AT OVER-FEEDING OF SMALL BABIES

Article Abstract:

Small babies are being over-fed to compensate for their size and this can cause obesity in later life, the International Taskforce on Obesity's chairman, Professor Philip James said on 13 November 2000. Small babies already have a greater chance of suffering high blood pressure and heart disease in the future and parents eager to ensure youngsters attain normal weight are exacerbating the problem. Over 15% of school age youngsters in the UK are now classed as overweight, with 1.5% described as obese.
