UK: AMSERVE HOLDING ACQUIRED BY DIXON'S

Article Abstract:

A 20% stake in Amserve, the Amstrad subsidiary responsible for production of the e-m@iler, has been acquired by UK consumer electronics retailer Dixon's. The move is seen as a vote of confidence in the e-mail telephone venture, which has so far been poorly received. Dixon's is to pay GB[pound] 3mn in cash, and GB[pound] 12mn in promoting the product in its 1,000 stores. Shares in Amstrad fell by almost 20% on the unveiling of the product in March 2000. It retails at GB[pound] 79.99, although it costs more to produce, and allows consumers to send emails through fixed line phones. Under a deal with British Telecom, users pay GB[pound] 0.13 to send or receive messages. News of the move by Dixon's caused Amstrad's shares to rise by GB[pound] 0.345 to GB[pound] 2.59.
