UK: FORD COST-CUTTING LEADS TO JOB LOSSES

Article Abstract:

A cost-cutting strategy being pursued throughout Europe by Ford will lead to significantly reduced output at the company's plant in Dagenham, UK. It is thought that Ford will announce the closure of a number of its European sites, and it is feared that up to 800 redundancies may result. Production of the Ford Fiesta at Dagenham will be reduced from two shifts to one, and other plants in the UK are also likely to be affected. Ford has not confirmed plans for any redundancies at Dagenham, although it has introduced a national programme for voluntary severance. The method of funding severance payments, through the merging of white collar and blue collar pension funds has raised fierce criticism from the salaried staff, whose fund is significantly larger than that of the blue collar employees.

UK: FORD WORKERS THREATEN STRIKE

Article Abstract:

Some 3,000 white-collar workers at the UK division of Ford have threatened strike action for the first time in ten years. The workers are said to be protesting against plans to increase the salaries of blue-collar workers more than white-collar workers and plans to merge their pension scheme with that of the blue-collar workers which is currently some GBu 155mn in deficit. The workers have given the required seven days notice for strike action, and have planned an overtime ban for mid February, followed by a one-hour stoppage on 21 February. If the situation has not been resolved a further 24-hour strike is planned for 24 February.

UK: POSSIBLE STRIKE ACTION AT FORD

Article Abstract:

Workers at Ford's Dagenham plant could vote on strike action in August 2000, a move that may lead to production at other European facilities of the US-based car manufacturer facing disruption. Transport & General Workers' Union chief negotiator, Tony Woodley, is scheduled to meet UK directors of Ford on 22 June 2000. Mr Woodley estimates that the decision to stop Fiesta output at Dagenham would result in 40,000 job cuts across southern England in addition to the 3,500 cuts initially.
