UK: WALES KEEN ON BECOMING GM-FREE ZONE

Article Abstract:

Wales is expected in the week beginning 13 March 2000 to declare itself a genetically modified (GM)-free zone, dealing another blow to the UK government's policy on the controversial crops. Development of new kind of GM maize offered by Aventis Crop Science and known as T25 is expected to be blocked by the Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee of the Welsh Assembly. The decision will effectively wreck GM crop seed clearance across the UK since all parts of the country must agree separately on the issue before the listing and marketing of seeds can take place.

UK: FEAR OVER ANIMAL TESTS POLICY

Article Abstract:

The UK's stringent policy covering tests on animals could have an adverse impact on progress in medical science, with scientists voicing their fears to the government in a letter to Lord Sainsbury of Turville, the minister for science. Scientists claim that gleaning a licence to carry out studies using animals can take a long time and that the situation could lead to the UK failing to sustain its role as a top player in biomedical science and biotechnology. Scientists are opposed to diluting regulations regarding the use of animals but want it made easier for them to adhere to the rules.

UK: FURTHER RESEARCH INTO GM TERMINATOR GENES?

Article Abstract:

The Department of the Environment's expert body on GM crops is advising further research into genetically modified (GM) with so called terminator genes that cannot flower or reproduce without being turned on. These experts claim that such technology could help protect the environment and stop cross-breed crops being created. However, they face considerable opposition from environmental pressure group Friends of the Earth which claims that the genes affecting plant's ability to reproduce could spread to ordinary crops.
