UK: IMPLICATIONS FOR MARKET OF DEMISE OF ESCORT

Article Abstract:

The ending of production of the Ford Escort, whose last model left the production line on 22 July 2000, is thought to indicate a change in the nature of the automotive market. The Escort, which was produced in Dagenham and first appeared in the UK in 1968, was typical of the values of the middle market. With its demise, Dagenham will no longer produce entire cars. The next generation of Fords, such as the Focus, are more international than local in feel. They are also divided more clearly into two brackets: basic and special, signifying the decline of the middle market.

The GLA has raised concerns over the estimated 1,900 jobs to be lost at the plant as a result of car production coming to an end.
