UK: INCREASE IN TEENAGE PREGNANCIES

Article Abstract:

The number of teenage pregnancies in the UK totalled 101,500 in 1998, up from 1997's 96,000, according to Office of National Statistics figures released on 28 March 2000. Almost 50% of the teen pregnancies in 1998 involved under-18s, with under-16s making up 8,438 of the total. In 1998, 42% of teenagers decided on an abortion, up from 1997's 40.6%. The figures, which showed the UK to have Europe's highest teenage pregnancy rates, revealed the highest pregnancy levels in almost ten years and come despite efforts by the government to cut the rate. The UK government has promised by 2010 to cut the number of teenage pregnancies by half and is hoping for a 2,000 fall in 2000 in the number of pregnancies among young girls.

Let the ancien regime beware!

Article Abstract:

Louis XVI of France was executed on Jan 21, 1793 and the monarchy ceased in 1830. The British commentator on the French Revolution Edmund Burke thought England's government needed a balance of democracy, aristocracy and monarchy. He suggested that the alienation of artists and writers and financial speculation led to the French revolution. The British in the 1990's have lost their sense of value, the government is divided and scandal affects the Royal Family in a similar way to that in France 200 years ago.
