UK: RISE IN NUMBER OF COMPANY BANKRUPTCIES

Article Abstract:

Figures released by the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) showed an 8.6% increase in the number of bankruptcies in England and Wales for the third quarter ending 30 September 2000. The quarter saw a total of 3,776 insolvencies, which was a rise on the corresponding period the previous year and the second quarter of 2000. The rise has been attributed to increasing competitive pressures on the small business sector. Trouble in the e-business sector has mainly affected the south while the north and midlands have suffered manufacturing setbacks.

UK: COST TO TAXPAYER OF COMPENSATION CLAIMS

Article Abstract:

Almost GB[pound] 9bn of the overall cost of compensation claims in the UK are swallowed by the taxpayer, according to a study by The Independent and revealed on 10 October 2000. The cost to the taxpayer may increase in 2001 to GB[pound] 12bn, which is the overall annual cost at present. The Treasury is unaware of the total extent of the situation or the affect on public finances. The spate of new liabilities can be attributed to court rulings and the emergence of a claims culture.
