UK: MERRILL LYNCH AND HSBC IN MERGER TALKS

Article Abstract:

US investment bank, Merrill Lynch, and UK retail bank, HSBC, are in talks regarding a future merger. The merger would not take place for a further two years, but if it did, would give the mega bank formed a market value of US$ 220bn if it were to take place. HSBC would gain access to Merrill Lynch Mercury and the broking network in the US. However, Merrill has said that it would want to keep a separate identity, which may prove to be an obstacle for the merger.
