UK: MOBILE PHONES ESSENTIAL TEENAGE ITEMS

Article Abstract:

Mobile telephones are now the most sought after accessory for teenagers and even children as young as nine and 10 years of age. This age group is also thought to be the fastest growing sector of the market. Bright, interchangeable fascias for the phones, as well as services such as texting, personalised ring tones, Internet access and games attract teenagers. The boom in text messaging has been attributed to the increase in teenagers obtaining mobile phones, as this is often cheaper than making calls. Teenagers with new models with more features are often found to look down on friends with more basic models.

Article Abstract:

Sales of mobile phones in the UK in the fourth quarter of 2001 could be between 30% and 40% lower than the levels achieved in the year-earlier period. For the whole of 2001, sales will at best equal those of 2000. There are a number of reasons for declining sales, including delays in the next generation of services.
