UK: MORGAN STANLEY TO EXPAND IN DOCKLANDS

Article Abstract:

The US investment bank, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, has announced plans for a major expansion of its London operations in Canary Wharf in the Docklands development. Morgan currently occupies, or is intending to occupy, 1mn sq ft of buildings in the Docklands, and has now announced plans to take up a further 500,000 sq ft, in a new building which is scheduled for completion by 2003. Morgan moved to the Docklands in 1991, and when the new project is completed it will have the second-largest presence at Canary Wharf, behind its rival Citigroup, which has 1.6mn sq ft under development.

Dismay over euro fudge

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions to the decision to reach a compromise over the presidency of the new European Central Bank. Dutch candidate Wim Duisenberg has technically been appointed as president for a full eight-year term, but under the terms of the compromise he will resign after four years in favour of a French candidate. This will probably be Bank of France Governor Jean-Claude Trichet. This compromise has dented the pride of almost all those involved.
