UK: NEW EU CHARTER CREATES RIFT

Article Abstract:

The new EU charter of citizens' rights had caused disputes between employers and unions over the inclusion of a "right to strike" plus union consultation on all issues affecting workers. This clashes with the British government, which has tried to cut down on social and economic rights by opposing a plan that would extend the right of information and consultation in the EU. It is rumoured that Tony Blair may even refuse to sign the charter, insisting that it cannot be legally binding. CBI has said that the right to strike will create confusion and ambiguity for employers.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair clearly wants a reformed House of Lords to act merely as a body to ratify government policies. He seems determined to eliminate independent thought within the House of Lords.
