UK: NEWSPAPERS FIGHT FOR RIGHT TO USE METRO NAME

Article Abstract:

Four publishers of free tabloid newspapers in the North of England are battling for the right to use the word Metro in the title. Sweden's Modern Times Group (MTG) was about to launch the Metro News in Newcastle upon Tyne whereupon the local Newcastle Chronicle and Journal bought a licence to publish Associated Newspapers' London Metro before the Sweden's hit the market. Now NC&J will mount a legal challenge to MTG's use of the name Metro. In a similar action in Manchester Evening News won an interim judgement to use Metro for its free paper. Associated Press was prevented using Metro within 16 miles of the city of Manchester.

Any old Sunday?

Article Abstract:

The Mail on Sunday has become extremely successful, with sales having risen to more than 2.3 million copies. This newspaper has recently been relaunched, with changes including a Review in the format of the newspaper. It is possible to express reservations about whether the relaunch has produced an improved newspaper. The Mail on Sunday has now become more conventional, and seems to lack flair and originality. However, it will remain popular because of the high standard of journalism and the lack of a strong competitor.

Survival of the slimmest

Article Abstract:

Some form of printed newspaper will be available in the future, as long as it also mixes its publishing efforts with some form of electronic edition. It is likely that newspapers of the future will be smaller and contain many references to websites, CD components and similar technologies. Many newspapers may revert to a minimalist style, as will magazines. Advertising will appear on almost every page and will have strong visual impact.
