UK: OUTRAGE AT SALE OF RAIL LAND

Article Abstract:

Transport pressure groups have slammed plans to sell off over 1,000 pieces of former British Rail land, fearing that it will jeopardise plans to promote integrated transport. They are angry that only 200 of the property being auctioned has been set aside for transport use, citing examples in Bristol, Bath and Gloucester, where the land sales conflict with local plans for new transport schemes. British Railways Board has sent a private list of the first 600 properties to councils and transport operators, who now have two months to prepare plans to bring the sites back into use before they are released on the open market. The portfolio could be worth at least GB[pound] 174mn and possibly much more if it goes to public auction.

A Crystal Palace for the millennium

Article Abstract:

Architect Ian Ritchie has faced considerable challenges with his design for a new Crystal Palace. This large glass building will form part of a 150 million pounds sterling redevelopment of the site of the original Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, England. The development must comply with strict planning and commercial conditions, unlike the original Crystal Palace. Bromley council has stated that the building must contain features which will make it attractive for commercial lettings, and these do not blend in well with a structure which is made almost entirely of glass.
