UK: POWERGEN ISSUES PROFIT WARNING

Article Abstract:

UK-based electricity generating and supply group, PowerGen, is envisaging a significant decline in its second half 2000 profits compared with the GB[pound] 241mn reported for the opening half, which was GB[pound] 48mn down on last time. PowerGen cited its failure to agree contracts with suppliers at the beneficial levels attained earlier in 2000, coupled with declining electricity prices. PowerGen executive chairman, Ed Wallis, said that the group plans in 2001 to purchase a US utility or UK regional electricity business and is optimistic despite the profits warning. PowerGen is seeking 5mn customers by end-2002, compared with less than 3mn at present, and believes that new utility services will help it achieve this aim.
