UK: P&O GROUP TO VOTE ON STRIKE ACTION

Article Abstract:

It has been revealed that members of the officers' union, Numast, working for the P&O group are to vote on industrial action. If this vote goes in favour of strike action five P&O companies will be affected. It is believed that union officials are planning 24-hour and 48-hour stoppages on services to Ireland and the Continent. It is believed that the officers are upset at pay offers between 1.2% and 1.4%. The company can only afford to pay rises in line with inflation due to its most difficult year for a decade. If the union members vote in favour of industrial action the strikes are likely to be held during the busy summer season, thus affecting people travelling to the Euro 2000 football tournament in Holland/Belgium and summer tourists.
