UK: SAINSBURY UNDER FIRE OVER ORGANIC FOOD

Article Abstract:

Sainsbury was criticised by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) on 15 June 2000 over a statement in promotional booklets that no chemical was employed in the production of organic food. The UK-based supermarket group was also attacked for claiming that veterinary medicines were not used in organic livestock farming and that organic food is good for people and costs slightly more. Sainsbury responded by claiming that the statements do not mislead customers and were correct.
