UK: SETBACK FOR GOVERNMENT'S ATC SELL-OFF PLAN

Article Abstract:

UK government plans to partially privatise air traffic control (ATC) services were dealt a blow on 9 May 2000 when rebel Labour Party MPs voted against the plan. The indications are that the government may now suffer defeat when the Lords debates the Transport Bill. Fears have been expressed that safety could be compromised if shares in the National Air Traffic Service were sold off.

UK: GOVERNMENT PLAN OVER AIRPORT SLOTS

Article Abstract:

Airlines should be given the opportunity to trade slots at crowded UK airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick, Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, stated on 9 November 2000. The plans are contained in a UK government study that expresses opposition to breaking up of Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick because the dearth of capacity would hinder competitive growth, a move welcomed by owner, BAA. There are 250,000 and 450,000 take-off and landing slots per year at Gatwick and Heathrow respectively and some already trade informally for between GBu 0.5mn-GBu 2mn.
