UK: SUPERMARKETS MAY SUPPLY ONLINE FROM STORES

Article Abstract:

The decision by UK supermarket concern Tesco to supply its online customers directly from existing stores looks set to be imitated by J Sainsbury and Asda. The rival groups had previously constructed dedicated depots from which to fulfil Internet orders, and while they will continue to use the depots, it is thought that they will supplement them with store-based supply. According to Tesco, a medium-sized store may cope with around 1,000 Internet orders per week. Its service covers 150 stores and may soon be available across the country. It has already proved more successful than competitors, with Internet sales in 1999 of GB[pound] 52mn. Although the store-based business model may prove more expensive in the long-term, Sainsbury, Asda and also Waitrose are thought to be considering it as a means of achieving rapid expansion.

UK: RECKITT & COLMAN MERGER HITCH

Article Abstract:

Reckitt & Colman is expected to disclose on 17 November 1999 that efforts to integrate with Benckiser of the Netherlands have suffered another hitch. The merger of UK-based Reckitt & Colman, known for its Lemsip and Dettol brands, with Benckiser, which offers Calgon and Vanish, would create the leading household products market player, valued at around GB[pound] 5bn. The indications are that the offer period regarding the integration will be extended, the third time this has happened.
