UK: TELEWEST LAUNCHES SURF UNLIMITED

Article Abstract:

Telewest Communications launched its Surf Unlimited offer on 13 December 1999, a service that will be available from 14 February 2000 across all the UK cable firm's franchise areas. Surf Unlimited will be open to residential phone subscribers of Telewest, who will be charged GB[pound] 9 a month to rent the phone line and who will be obliged to spend an additional GB[pound] 10 a month at least through other call charges. Telewest's unmetered service is seen as a major competitive challenge to British Telecom and will also impact the 300-plus Internet service providers in the UK that glean 15% of the metered line charge payment of Internet users.

UK: SECURITY HOLE IN BT E-MAIL SERVICE

Article Abstract:

BT has fixed a security hole in its Talk21 e-mail service, thanks to John Heaton, a Scottish businessman. Heaton discovered that when using a standard logging-in procedure to find out how many areas of his website had been visited, he was able to enter the e-mail accounts of the customers who had followed a Talk21 link (through a web monitoring package which is widely available) to the site.
