UK: MINIMUM DRIVING AGE MAY BE INCREASED

Article Abstract:

The minimum age for driving may be raised by a year to 18 by the UK government in recommendations contained in a paper on road safety to be released on 1 March 2000. The government is keen to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on UK roads over the coming ten years by 40%, in part by imposing stiffer penalties on irresponsible motorists. The government is also keen to impose new regulations which would oblige drivers to equip their vehicles for up to 12 months with a sign denoting they had recently passed their driving test.

UK: UNION CONCERN OVER GOVERNMENT'S FUEL DEAL

Article Abstract:

The UK government has introduced covert amendments to European safety rules allowing lorry drivers to remain at the wheel for up to 70 hours over the coming month, leading to criticism from unions. The move was brought in on 13 September 2000 at the height of the fuel crisis and entailed the suspension of legislation in order to bring the turmoil to an end. Road safety groups, unions and hauliers pointed to the launch of an initiative to reduce driver fatigue by the government in August 2000. Research revealed that over 100 deaths are caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel. The rule relaxation will cover all hauliers, although it targets petrol tanker drivers specifically.
