UK literacy at worrying levels, says world study

There is a significant gap between the literacy abilities of the top 10% and the bottom 10% of adults in the UK, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Around 7 million adults cannot write, read or communicate up to the level they would require in the business environment.

The Blair project - treating the pupils like adults

School will teach in pupils' own languages

Pupils at White Hart Lane School in north London, England, will have the opportunity to learn subjects in their home language, rather than English, as far as possible. The school will begin by teaching science in Turkish, and this will then be extended to mathematics.
