US/NETHERLANDS: MICROSOFT & PHILIPS FORM VENTURE

Article Abstract:

Microsoft has formed a venture with Philips in order to develop next generation set-top boxes for digital television. As part of this deal Philips is expected to license Microsoft's enhanced TV software for installation in its set-top boxes. The chairman of Philips Digital Networks, Rob van Oostenbrugge, has revealed that the companies are intending to lay the foundation for the new generation of broadband services via Internet-enabled and intelligent appliances, the first of which is expected to be available early in 2001.

US: MICROSOFT IN TALKS WITH NEWS CORP

Article Abstract:

US-based software group, Microsoft, may purchase a stake in the satellite broadcasting operations of News Corp, after discussions involving the two parties were confirmed on 7 March 2000. News Corp owner, Rupert Murdoch, is looking at floating his satellite operations but it is unclear whether he has held discussions with Microsoft's Bill Gates. News Corp is in talks with a number of companies, among them Microsoft, over the acquisition of a holding in a spin-off satellite broadcasting venture being considered by the former, revealed the former's pay TV software unit, NDS Group.

UK: TRINITY LOOKS TO BUY NEWS COMMUNICATIONS

Article Abstract:

Trinity Mirror has entered the battle to purchase UK-based regional publishing business, News Communications & Media, and has applied to Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, Stephen Byers, to purchase the business. Johnston Press of Edinburgh and US-based Gannett are also vying to purchase News Communications, which is valued at around GB[pound] 340mn. Trinity Mirror is the largest regional newspaper publisher in the UK.
