US: OECD CALL TO RAISE INTEREST RATES

Article Abstract:

US interest rates should be raised over the coming few months by 1% at least in order to prevent the adverse impact of an inflationary surge, warned the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD) on 11 May 2000. Rates should be boosted by end-summer 2000 to 7% to reduce GDP growth from the 4.5% envisaged for 2000 to less than 3% the following year, the global economic body believes. The OECD's Ignazio Visco says that the rate of US economic growth had exceeded expectations, amid indications that the current projection for 2000 of 4.5% could be upgraded over the coming two weeks.
