UK: NEW TEST FOR PRE-ECLAMPSIA

Article Abstract:

A test for pre-eclampsia, which causes premature births and convulsions, has been developed by researchers headed by Reading University's Professor Philip Lowry. Pre-eclampsia causes 600 babies to die in the UK per year, along with ten women, and is caused by irregular supply of blood to the foetus. The test relies on the identification of neurokinin K (NKB), an important protein produced by the placenta and which is buried in the bloodstream of women experiencing the onset of the disease.

US: PREMATURE BIRTHS LINKED TO GUM DISEASE

Article Abstract:

Gum disease among pregnant mothers could be as damaging to an unborn baby as smoking, according to research by the University of North Carolina's Professor Steve Offenbacker, to be released on 4 September 2000. The five-year study covered 357 women aged between 15 and 45 and found that expectant mothers who do not care for their teeth properly or make regular visits to the dentist were more likely to give birth prematurely, adversely impacting the long-term health of their child.
