Uganda: standing on ceremony

Article Abstract:

Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, who was educated at Bradfield School and Magdelene College, Cambridge, England, will become the 36th kabaka, or king, of the Baganda people on Jul 31, 1993. His father Kabaka Frederick Mutesa II was the last king until he was driven into exile in 1966. The kabakaship emphasises the tribe when African countries are experiencing ethnic rivalries. President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda appeases the Baganda by reinstating the monarchy in a ceremonial role as he is opposed to multi-party democracy.

Kenyans prepare to rally in legal opposition to Moi

Article Abstract:

Kenya is to end its one party monopoly of the government and already other parties are planning political rallies. Western refusal of aid has forced President Daniel arap Moi to allow political opposition to the government and its main rival, Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD), is to hold its first legal rally in Nairobi. Several other parties have been set up, but problems with ethnic backgrounds, political and economic power and bribery have more influence at local levels than actual policies.
