Article Abstract:

The economic situation in Russia, with the chronic devaluation of the rouble, means that the income to the ballet companies is nothing like enough to support them. The only way adequate income can be obtained is by touring abroad and this is reflected in the high number of overseas appearances now being made. The Maryinsky, formerly Kirov, Theatre will visit Italy, Israel, Spain, Germany, Finland, Belgium and the US between May and September 1992 with just a few days in Russia.

Back in the ASSR

Article Abstract:

Composer Benjamin Britten forged strong links with Armenia through spending a month there in 1965 at the Armenian Composers' Union holiday camp at Dilizhan, north of Yerevan. During this time he worked with Peter Pears, Mstislav Rostropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya, and the visit ended with a special festival of his music. He received a warm welcome in Armenia, and is still remembered by some of the people with whom he came into contact during that time.

Under Western eyes

Article Abstract:

An element of chaos is vital in all good fiction, according to novelist Philip Hensher. For this reason, he does not plan his work in any detail. He believes that too many novelists focus on what they feel readers will want, rather than on what they believe in themselves. He does not see any connection between his life as a novelist and his life as a human being, and rejects the idea that his work can offer any redemption.
