Underground movement against the men in suits

Article Abstract:

Saxophonist Courtney Pine found that it was no longer possible for him to continue playing in the strict jazz tradition. He began exploring new musical directions with his first album, 'Journey to the Urge Within,' released in 1986, and has found that his popularity has considerably increased. He enjoys being able to appeal to people who are not familiar with the history of jazz, and has been inspired by a range of musical traditions.

Searching for that perfect sound

Article Abstract:

The most successful jazz musicians are those who focus on producing a beautiful sound, according to saxophonist Charles Lloyd. He has been particularly influenced by Billie Holiday, and believes that her singing is akin to prayer. He was extremely well known in the late 1960s, but retreated into relative obscurity for many years after a split with his quartet. He only began to record again in the late 1980s.
