Article Abstract:

Anglo-Dutch consumer products group, Unilever, has agreed a deal with US-based pharmaceuticals group, Bristol-Myers Squibb, to develop a drug able to prevent baldness and which may allow hair growth. The deal will result in Unilever gaining so-called milestone payments as each regulatory barrier is overcome by the drug. Bristol-Myers Squibb will assume control for developing the product and attempt to produce a compound, development work on which may take up to five years. Unilever revealed too that the deal marks the first time its technology has been licensed to another firm with regard to development of a prescription product.

Genetic engineers create sugar that is not fattening

Article Abstract:

The Netherlands-based Centre for Plant Breeding and Reproduction Research has developed a genetically modified type of sugar beet which produces a sweetener - called fructan - that is indigestible to humans. This means that it should be non-fattening, although it tastes just as sweet as normal sugar. The new plant uses genes derived from the Jerusalem artichoke and it any also be unable to produce seeds, something that will help to stop the spread of its genetically altered properties to other plants.
